Senior Lecturer - Clinical Skills and Simulation (Academic Team Lead)

Job Summary

This is an exciting time to join the School to lead a team of academics to enhance our programmes from a clinical skills and simulation perspective and to help us realise the ambition of our Strategy. You will have responsibility to demonstrate and promote excellence in clinical skills and simulation through the design, development and delivery of contemporary, innovative and where possible, interdisciplinary teaching content. You will undertake scholarly activity, maintain or work towards being research active and contribute to the School’s commercial activity and innovation, aligned to the School Strategy.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Academic Strategic Lead 

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Academic and professional support staff 

PURPOSE OF POST:  The Academic Team Lead (ATL) for Clinical Skills and 

Simulation will provide leadership for a team of academics. Supported by the Head of School and School Leadership Team, the ATL will contribute to the continued development and implementation of the School’s strategic plan, with particular focus on the growth and enhancement of clinical skills and simulation in the taught academic portfolio. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: 

The ATL will provide leadership to ensure students are afforded an excellent student experience with real world application and the creation of distinctive clinical skills and simulated practice learning opportunities. The ATL will support the development of successful income generation through research, enterprise or innovation, contribute to teaching, have line management responsibilities and be responsible for the support and development of a strong and ambitious group of colleagues, including early career academics. 

•   Promote a working culture within the academic and professional support teams which is collegiate, inclusive and reflective of the University’s values and behaviours. 

•   Lead, manage and develop a team of academic and professional support staff, including fair and effective allocation of workload in accordance with the skills and capacity of team members. 

•   Appraise and advise staff on personal and career development plans. 

•   Provide leadership to design evidence-based, high quality clinical skills and simulation opportunities that foster skills development and confidence in a diverse range of students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels 

•   Work in partnership with the Course Leaders and wider team to deliver high quality, innovative clinical skills and simulation. 

•   Lead the evaluation and enhancement of clinical skills and simulation in line with professional standards and University academic and quality regulations. 

•   Facilitate strong research / teaching links to the educational standards of the School / University. 

•   Lead the development and implementation of a research-informed teaching strategy, innovative learning, assessment methods and educational scholarship. 

•   Support the dissemination of teaching and learning good practice, drawing on international, national and local developments. 

•   Enhance the reputation of the School by leading on appropriate research and scholarship output and publications of successful School initiatives. 

•   Develop and maintain internal and external networks in order to support the School’s strategic vision and to promote excellence in clinical skills and simulation within the School. 

•   Engage in research and scholarly activities within internal and external networks that link to the School's research and scholarship strategy. 

•   Establish and maintain relevant professional links for the advancement of the School. 

•   Represent the School at relevant committees internally and externally to the University. 

•   Carry out other duties as may be required by Head of School. 

  

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

Masters degree in relevant subject area. 

Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council / Health and 

Care Professions Council. 

Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. 

Relevant teaching qualification. 
 

Knowledge

Knowledge and awareness of current policy and priorities relevant to clinical skills and simulation. 
 

Experience

Experience of leading the development, delivery and evaluation of clinical skills and simulation. 

Experience of design of simulation scenarios and effective debriefing methods. 

  

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

PhD or doctorate. 
Senior / Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. 
 

Knowledge

Knowledge of current patient simulators used to support students’ learning. 
 

Experience

Experience of leading an academic team. 

Experience of leadership and teambuilding in relation to clinical skills and simulation. 

Experience of delivering clinical skills and / or simulation for commercial purposes. 

Evidence of a developing publication record.

Behaviour 6: Pastoral Care and Welfare - Experience of calming and reassuring those with work/study related problems who may be experiencing distress and dealing with difficult welfare situations or confidential matters.  

  

Salary:  £51,799 - £60,022 per year. 

Position Type: Full Time, Permanent, 35 Hours per week.
